How the automotive industry reshapes the vision of the future of transportation

In the last years, the automotive industry has started new plans to develop the next generation of traffic.

The automotive companies are challenging themselves to offer the most futuristic designs together with enhanced technologies that could lead to a future of self-driving cars.

Nevertheless, all of them seem to agree on the fact that a low environmental impact is an essential priority for future transportation but, when it comes to the appearance of the new vehicles, there are no limits to designers’ creativity and imagination.

1. Alfa Romeo Pandion

Cutting-edge concept car from 2010. The futuristic design is based on a “Skin & Frame” duality inspired by the snake and the cross of the Alfa Romeo logo, where the reptile represents the seductive aesthetic, and the cross stands for the stability of the form.

2. Toyota Concept-i

Concept-i is Toyota’s vision of the future of mobility. This car is designed to communicate with the driver through an advanced AI that can detect feelings with biometric sensors and offer a personalized experience.

3. BMW ZX-6

Designed by third-year students of the IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) in Turin, in collaboration with BMW, the ZX-6 is a fantastic visionary concept for the next generation of vehicles.

4. Nissan  Anion

Powered by graphene batteries, the two-seater futuristic Nissan Anion has been designed with the ambition to reinvent the sports cars for Generation Z from the year 2030.

5. Rolls-Royce  VISION NEXT 100

This is what the luxury car of the future might look like. The Rolls-Royce trademark squared design is still defined in the VISION NEXT 100, but the elements and lines have been redefined to introduce a more futuristic look.

6. Patio  project

This ambitious car has multiple functions based on 5G connectivity and a modern ultrasonic rain removing technology system that helps keep the windshield clear even without activating the windshield wiper.

Once the driver gets out of this car, it will drive automatically to a charging station nearby for wireless charging, and drive back to the users when they arrive at the pick-up location.

With this new concept, PATEO aims to demonstrate how the connectivity technologies could reinvent the vehicle industry.

7. HUMAN HORIZONS – Concept H Hypervelocity

The cutting-edge design of Concept H enhances the aerodynamic efficiency of the car and improves the performance on the road.

The advanced features of this car are the “RE.C.E.S.S.” (“Re-Configurable Cockpit Electric Steering System), a unique system that uses drive-by-wire technology that enables the steering wheel to be moved to any of the three seats, allowing any of the three passengers to drive.

8. Hydro car Premier

With its sharp edge design, the Premier is a prototype of a two-seat sports roadster car developed by AGH University of Science and Technology. The body is completely made of carbon fiber, and the engine is equipped with an innovative system for the conversion of hydrogen into electric power.

9. DSX E-Tense Concept

“When the teams of DS Automobiles dream of 2035.” E-Tense Concept is an electric-powered race car equipped with a Formula E engine. Inside the futuristic and asymmetrical structure, there are two separate cabins for the driver and the passenger.

10. AeroMobil – 5.0 VTOL Concept

AeroMobil is one of the most advanced start-ups in the field of personal aerial transportation. The 5.0 VTOL Concept is the project for a flying taxi that incorporates, in the car structure, a foldable system of propellers able to perform vertical take-off and flying the passengers to their destination in case of traffic jams.

11. Aston Martin – Vestige

The final year car design students of IED in Turin worked on this Aston Martin concept sports car project for the 2025 market. The design and the project name “Vestige” was inspired by the Egyptian origins of the Aston Martin’s logo – the scarab’s wings of the god Khepri.

13. Pininfarina Maserati – Birdcage 75TH

Elegant and futuristic, Birdcage 75th is a concept car with a cutting-edge form that aims to achieve a combination of unique design and technological innovation. This visionary project, realized by Pininfarina for the 75th anniversary of its foundation, envisions a possible future sports car. The prototype won the “Best Concept Award” at Geneva Motor Show in 2005.

14. Jaguar – Future Type

Realized with a futuristic mindset, the Future-Type is Jaguar’s project for the next generation of cars. The unique and ultramodern design is only one of the innovations that Jaguar aims to introduce. This vehicle was programmed with a high-tech system that enables the car to be summoned on demand through the removable multi-function steering wheel.

15. Aston Martin – Lagonda Vision Concept

With smooth and sleek lines, ultramodern automotive technology, and spacious comfort-oriented interiors, the Vision Concept embodies Lagonda’s futuristic vision of luxury transportation.

16. Renault – EZ Go

With the EZ GO, Renault focused on the vision of a future urban mobility. This innovative vehicle is designed to become a shared driverless mobility service, a “robot-taxi” on-demand that could be summoned via smartphone just like a taxi service. EZ GO is part of the Groupe Renault’s plan to launch an automotive taxi service by 2022.

17. Audi A9 Hybrid Sports Sedan

This concept car by designer Daniel Garcia was inspired by the modern buildings architectures of Santiago Calatrava in Valencia. The most striking feature of this futuristic concept is that the roof and the windscreen are of the same white metallic color of the car body.

18. Citroen GT

The GT was realized in collaboration with Polyphony, designer of the simulation game Gran Turismo 5, with the purpose to “replicate a vehicle from the digital world.” The result is a sports car with a cutting-edge and powerful design that focuses mainly on aerodynamics and fluid lines to enhance the car’s performance and the driving experience.

19. Rinspeed Σtos

Now, some of you might be asking, “What’s so futuristic about this car?” Well, for this concept car, the innovation is not in the exterior design but the inside and build-it technologies.

The Σtos is a self-driving car with a retractable steering wheel, and you can choose to drive or let the auto-driving technology do it for you. Plus, the rear of the car is equipped with a landing platform for a drone. The purpose of the drone is to supply some additional functions, such as picking up things you ordered during the travel or just taking pictures.

20. Peugeot 4002

With the 4002 concepts, the designer Stefan Schulze reinvents the old retro Peugeot 402 from the 1930s. The design is futuristic, yet it holds an old-fashioned factor enhanced by the warm ivory and brown colors in contrast with the chrome body elements.
